The company-sponsored 401(k) retirement savings plan offers employees the financial benefits of a tax-deferred retirement savings plan to reach their financial goals.  The contributions you make to the company’s 401(k) plan are deducted from your pay before taxes are withheld.  As a result, your taxable income is reduced and you pay less in current taxes.  The money you have invested can also grow without being reduced by current taxes.  Additionally, the growth in savings is not taxed until the money is withdrawn.

The Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is a pretax benefit allowable under Internal Revenue Code section 125.  The plan allows eligible employees to set aside a specific pretax dollar amount for unreimbursed medical, dental, vision, over-the-counter items and dependent care expenses.  If you have predictable out-of-pocket expenses, you should consider opening an FSA.
