FAQs

What is Private Duty Nursing?

Private duty nursing is skilled nursing care provided for children less than 21 years of age who need individualized, continuous care and who meet the medical necessity criteria.  PDN is meant to support the care of the child living at home.

Families and caregivers may choose private duty nursing because: (a) it will help them take care of their child at home; (b) it will help them learn and feel comfortable taking care of their child and (c) it will help children learn to take care of themselves.

Why should I choose Exceptional Home Care to provide my child’s Private Duty Nursing?

The quality of care your child receives and the abilities of the nurse are very important things to keep in mind when selecting a provider.  We are licensed and certified by the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services.  We have an extensive screening process for our employees that includes criminal history checks and reference checks.  Our nurses complete an extensive orientation that includes a skills lab check-off.

How are the number of hours my child will receive determined?

Many factors are considered in deciding how many PDN hours a child will receive.  Your child’s physician will provide information about specific treatment and medications your child requires.  The nurse will develop a plan for providing the nursing care.  The number of hours your child receives will be based on the frequency of treatments, medications and assessments required, as well as the type of education family members need to manage the medical needs of their child.

What do Exceptional Home Care Nurses do?

EHC nurses support you as the primary caregiver and decision maker for your child.  They promote family and client independence; provide professional registered nurses to oversee all aspects of your child’s care; and serve as a resource for other services your child may need (support groups, equipment, supplies and other programs).  EHC nurses also provide education to assist in the management of the medical needs of your child.

What is CCP?

Private Duty Nursing (PDN) is a service offered by Texas Medicaid that is intended to support families in caring for their child with skilled needs and promote family centered, community based care for their children.

The primary caregivers remain responsible for a portion of the child’s daily care. PDN is not intended to replace parents or guardians as primary caregivers, nor provide all the care that a child requires to live at home.

A Registered Nurse performs a comprehensive assessment in your home that enables him/her to submit required information to Medicaid.  Once they review the paperwork, the request is either approved or denied. The number of hours your child receives is set forth by Medicaid.  The services are available immediately upon approval from Medicaid.

What is MDCP?

The Medically Dependent Children’s Program (MDCP) offers home and community based services to eligible, medically dependent children and adults in Texas.  The program is designed to provide respite and adjunct support, certain adaptive aids and certain home modifications to a limited number of children and young adults under the age of 21.  The program is meant to support families in caring for their children and young adults with disabilities.  A statewide waiting list for entry into MDCP is maintained on a first come, first served basis.

What if my child has private insurance?

Some private insurance policies also cover PDN. The hospital will contact the insurance company to verify benefits.  Once the hospital refers your care to us, EHC will contact the insurance company to receive approval.  We contract with an extensive number of insurance companies.
